Germany keen to set up automobile assembly plant: Minister

Germany has expressed interest to set up a BMW-Mercedes assembly plant in Bangladesh, says Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

Some car parts will be manufactured in Bangladesh and the rest will be bought from abroad and assembled at the proposed plant, he said.

Kamal came up with remarks while addressing the media after a meeting with a five-member delegation, led by German Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Fahrenholtz, at the Planning Ministry in Dhaka on Monday (Sept 9).

The minister said the plant will act similarly to car assembly factories of these brands in Thailand.

If the plant is set up, Bangladesh will no longer need to import these two luxury brands, he added.

The German delegation is on a five-day official visit to Bangladesh to explore new business opportunities.
