Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) today welcomed the government initiative to form a bank commission in a bid to reform the country's banking sector.

Economist Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, distinguished fellow at CPD, spoke in this regard while addressing a press briefing titled "Proposed Banking Commission: CPD's Reaction" at Brac Centre in the capital this morning.

Claiming that the country's banking sector is being controlled by a handful of individuals and entities, Dr Debapriya said they expect to see recommendations made by the commission regarding the sector in the next budget.

He also suggested the government to take prompt interim measures on forming the commission.

"The citizens are feeling helpless and alarmed as they fear an extremely fragile scenario is looming in the banking sector," Dr Debapriya said.

He furthered said the government has taken a timely initiative to form the bank commission amid this alarming circumstance.

Earlier on Wednesday, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal held a meeting with renowned economist Prof Wahiduddin Mahmud at his Secretariat office.

"We will form the bank commission through discussions with many persons in this regard. Someone who would be able to dedicate time and work for the sake of the country will be put in charge of the commission," the finance minister told journalists, following a meeting of the ministerial committee on government purchases.
