Survey: 70% Drop in Earnings of Low-Income People

A recent survey found that the income of the ultra-poor, moderately poor and vulnerable non-poor community declined by 70% after the country-wide shutdown of the global coronavirus epidemic.

Meanwhile, economic activity also decreased by 71 percent in urban areas and 55 percent in rural areas of the country, whereas it increased by 50 percent for poor people and by 40 percent for vulnerable non-poor.

The survey, entitled "Poverty Trends under COVID-19: Exchanging Results from the PPRC-BIGD Rapid Answer Study," was released by an online media briefing in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Power and Participation Research Center (PPRC) and the BRAC Institute of Governance and Growth (BIGD) jointly commissioned the survey.
