Discussion on 'Bacillary Dysentery' Held at IU

Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia on Sunday hosted a seminar on isolation, identification, and characterization of multidrug-resistant causative agents of bacillary dysentery from clinical samples.

Bacillary dysentery, caused by the bacteria from the family Shigella, is also known as shigellosis.

Shigella symptoms generally begin one or two days after coming into contact with the bacteria, and last for a week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

''The treatment for dysentery will depend on what type one contracts. In some cases, shigella will be treated with an antibiotic. Unfortunately, some strains of the bacteria are resistant to antibiotics.''

And the discussions at the IU seminar shed light on serotyping and molecular characterization of bacteria that cause bacillary dysentery.

They also talked about the ways to identify the main reasons behind not getting rid of dysentery despite using multidrug.

The applied nutrition and food technology department of Islamic University organized the seminar.

Professor M Abdus Samad, Biological Science faculty dean of Islamic University, addressed the seminar as the chief guest, while applied nutrition and food technology department Chairman Professor Abul Kashem Tang spoke as the special guest with Professor M Rezaul Karim of the same department in the chair.

AFM Aminul Huq, a Ph.D. fellow at the applied nutrition and food technology department, presented an article under the supervision of Professor Dipak Kumar Paul.

IU applied nutrition and food technology department Associate Professor Dr Md Asad-Ud-Daula conducted the seminar attended by around 50 teachers from different departments of the university including, Professor M Mamunur Rahman, Professor Rezuanul Islam and Professor ATM Mijanur Rahman.
