Dhaka University
(DU), the country's oldest and most prestigious university is commemorating
its 100th anniversary on a small scale today.
Because of the
coronavirus outbreak, there was no in-person program, only a symbolic one to
mark the day.
Meanwhile,
university officials said that the centennial's main event will be conducted on
November 1 in a vivid and grand manner.
A virtual
discussion will be held today at 4:00 p.m. as part of the symbolic program,
with Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.
Abdul Gaffar
Chowdhury, a prominent Language Movement veteran, journalist, and thinker, will
deliver the keynote address at the occasion, titled "Centenary of Dhaka
University: Looking Back."
The conversation
will be streamed live on the DU ICT Cell's Facebook page.
On July 1, 1921,
Dhaka University, the country's highest echelon for academic excellence,
started academic activities on 600 acres of land with 12 departments, three
faculties, 60 teachers, 877 students, and three residential halls.
The university today has 13 faculties, 13 institutes, 84 departments, 60 bureau and research centers, 19 residential halls, four hostels, 138 affiliated colleges and institutions, 46,150 students, and 2,008 teachers after 100 years.
