After a long hiatus of about a year and a half, the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 suggested reopening the country's educational institutions as the infection rate is declining, reports media.

After a meeting of the committee on Thursday night, National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) Chairman Mohammad Shahidullah said, “As vaccination is slowly being confirmed, considering the overall situation and subject to taking some precautionary measures regarding public health, the educational institution can now be reopened.”

The committee will convey their decision to the Education Ministry formally soon.

An inter-ministerial meeting has been called next Sunday to take a final decision on reopening the school-colleges. The meeting will also decide about the steps after the reopening of the educational institutions.

Earlier, on Thursday Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the parliament that measures are being taken to reopen the schools and colleges soon.

The government shut the educational institutions on March 17, 2020, after the country reported its first Covid-19 cases on March 8.

Then the closure was extended several times, most recently until September 11.
