The government has decided to keep educational institutions closed two days a week to save energy.

The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam confirmed.

Meanwhile, the government also decided to set office hours from 8am to 3pm, for all government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions from Wednesday.

Banks will open its door at 9am and continue till 4pm as per the new decision.

Previously, Education Minister Dipu Moni said the government was planning to take classes five days a week in educational institutions across the country in the new curriculum.

The minister said: “The global power crisis has led us to make this decision so we can save electricity. The vehicles used to carry students to schools consume a lot of fuel. By reducing the number of days at school, fuel consumption could be reduced.”
