The government is considering starting pensions for non-government employees, including teachers, after their retirement. Under this proposal, upon retirement, teachers will receive a lump sum payment and a monthly pension thereafter.

Last Thursday, an unofficial meeting was held at the Kalyan Trust and Retirement Board about the economic matters of the teachers. In addition to Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, senior officials of the education administration were also present at the meeting. A proposal to start pensions for teachers was discussed at the meeting.

According to sources, a proposal has been made to start pensions for non-MPO teachers as part of the government's public pension scheme. In this case, teachers will not receive their full retirement amount at once. Half of the retirement amount will be paid as a lump sum, and the remaining half will be given as a pension. The teachers will receive this pension for life. If they pass away, their nominee will receive the pension.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a staffer present at the meeting said that discussions were held on starting a pension scheme for teachers. To implement this, changes to the laws of the retirement board will be required. For this reason, a proposal to form a high-level technical committee was put forward at the meeting. This committee will determine everything.

It is worth mentioning that teachers and employees of non-government schools have been receiving benefits from the Kalyan Trust since 1990. The retirement benefits have been available since 2005. They receive a certain amount of money each month as a donation deducted from their MPO share. Now, the proposal to start pensions for teachers is being considered.
