Hugh Jackman reported on his Twitter account that he
has tested positive for COVID-19, which has led Broadway to cancel his musical,
'The Music Man,' until the first day of next year.
The Australian actor preferred to announce that he had
been infected so as not to give room for speculation.
"I just wanted you to hear it from me," a masked Jackman told his 30 million Instagram followers. "I tested positive this morning for covid. My symptoms are like a cold ... but I'm fine," he said, adding he had a sore throat and runny nose.
Just wanted you to hear it from me. I tested positive for covid. Mild symptoms and as soon as I’m cleared … looking forward to getting back to The Winter Garden! @MusicManBway pic.twitter.com/q1oEAzXX02
'The Music Man', which had already suffered the
increase of coronavirus cases in New York with the cancellation of its shows on
December 25 and 26, also communicated through Twitter that it will not return
until next Saturday, January 1.
So, to be able to enjoy Hugh Jackman, we will have to
wait a little longer; specifically until January 6.
Musicals affected by the omicron variant
On social media, thousands of get-well wishes poured in
for the star, who is playing the role of Professor Harold Hill in the Meredith
Willson creation.
This is not the only musical that has been affected by
the expansion of the omicron variant. 'Jagged Little Pill', 'Thoughts of a
Coloured Man', 'Ain't Too Proud' and 'Waitress' have also said goodbye to
Broadway for good.
On the other hand, 'Hamilton' or 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Legacy' would not return until this past Tuesday, December 28th after several weeks without being able to open its doors, while 'The Lion King' or 'Alladin' returns this Wednesday, December 29th.
Omicron is now the dominant variant in the United
States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which
estimates that it was responsible for 59 percent of infections for the week
ending Dec. 25.
In Australia, at least 90 performers have contracted
the coronavirus, plunging entire productions into isolation and forcing shows
to be canceled in Melbourne and Sydney.
