Siam Ahmed to Star in Hindi Film ‘In the Ring’

India’s Mithila Palkar (“Small Things” on Netflix), Javed Jafari (“Sooryavanshi”), and Bangladeshi Siam Ahmed (“Shaan”) join the cast of “In the Ring”.

Set in the Muslim boxing community of Kheddarpur, Kolkata, India, the film is a psychological thriller about Shama, a 17-year-old boxer who trades places with her husband to fight in the national championship when she is caught up in the murder of her aunt, reports media. 

The cast also includes Razia Shabnam, who is one of the first Indian women to be awarded a referee and an international boxing coach.

The Hindi-language film is directed by American filmmaker Alka Raghuram, who previously directed the popular documentary Burqa Boxers about Muslim women boxers in Kolkata.

The project is being produced by Sreyashii Sengupta for Singapore-based Darpan Global and Souvikk Dasgupta for Oriizon Global in India, and Rick Ambrose in Los Angeles serves as executive producer.

Ragram said, “I started writing this script while shooting the documentary Burqa Boxer.” While immersion in their world allowed me to tell the documentary story in the style of realism, it also made me want to explore inside. Sengupta said, “Growing up in Kolkata and always looking for stories from my roots while in Singapore, I wasn’t familiar with this community of spirited women until I saw her documentary. The intensity and strength of such a story that is then turned into a movie gives her a voice like no other.” “.

Ambrose added, “I first came across this project in Goa’s Bazaar where I met Alka and knew right away that I wanted to be a part of bringing this script to life.
