The finance ministry recently granted $29 million (Tk 246 crore) to the health ministry for the purchase of a Sinopharm vaccine from China.

According to a finance ministry letter addressed to the health ministry on July 8, the money came from a specific fund set aside in the budget to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

On May 27, the government authorized a request to spend $150 million on 1.5 crore doses of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine.

According to officials, Bangladesh paid the first installment of Tk 280 crore on June 24.

On February 7, Bangladesh began a vaccination campaign with Oxford-AstraZeneca doses obtained from India's Serum Institute.

The administration of the first dose has been suspended since April 26 before resuming it recently. The government also has suspended the registration for Covid-19 shots due to the shortage of vaccine amid a delay in the timely arrival of consignments from India.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has asked the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and India to send jabs on an emergency basis to cover the second phase of the vaccination drive's shortage.
