The US pharmaceutical giant
Pfizer has announced that it will supply cheap coronavirus pills to poorer
countries. To this end, they have made an agreement.
Pfizer said on Tuesday
(November 16th) that it had agreed to license the production of a generic
version of the Paxlovid pill. For this, they have entered into an agreement with
the Medicines Patent Pool. As a result, the pill will be available in 95 low- and
middle-income countries at a low cost.
Interim statistics show that
Pfizer's pill reduces the risk of serious illness or death in the corona by 89
percent.
The Geneva-based Medicines
Patent Pool is a US-based international organization. It works to facilitate
drug development for low- and middle-income countries.
Charles Gore, the agency's
executive director, said: "The reason this license is so important is that
once approved, this oral drug is particularly suitable for low- and
middle-income countries and could play a significant role in saving
lives."
