Bangladesh People's Life Expectancy Decreases To 72.3yrs

According to a report titled "Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics 2023" published today by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the expected average lifespan of people in the country has decreased within just one year. In 2023, the statistically expected lifespan at birth has decreased to 72.3 years, whereas it was 72.4 years in 2022.

The report indicates that within a year, the population growth rate in the country has decreased. In 2023, the natural population growth rate was 1.33 percent, which was 1.407 percent in 2022. Additionally, the population density per square kilometer stands at 1,179 people. The crude birth rate per thousand population is 19.4, which was 19.8 in 2022. At the same time, the crude death rate per thousand population is 6.1, compared to 5.8 in 2022. The under-five mortality rate stands at 33 per thousand live births, and the maternal mortality ratio is 136 per hundred thousand live births, which was 153 in 2022.

The survey reveals that the leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease, which accounts for 1.027 percent of mortality, followed by cerebral hemorrhage, accounting for 0.64 percent of deaths. The average age at first marriage for males is 24.2 years, while for females, it is 18.4 years. In terms of internal migration, the rate of rural-to-rural migration stands at 20.4 percent, and urban-to-urban migration is at 43.4 percent.

In 2023, the percentage of contraceptive users slightly decreased to 62.1 percent compared to 63.3 percent in 2022. Similarly, the unmet need for contraception decreased to 15.57 percent from 16.62 percent in 2022. The household size remains unchanged from 2022 at 4.2 persons, but there has been an increase in the proportion of female-headed households from 17.4 percent in 2022 to 18.9 percent in 2023.

On the other hand, the percentage of the population enjoying electricity has risen to 97.53 percent in 2023 compared to 2022. The literacy rate for individuals aged seven years and above is 77.9 percent, while for those aged 15 years and above, it has slightly increased to 75.6 percent compared to 74.4 percent in 2022.

Furthermore, the percentage of youth not in education, employment, or training (NEET) slightly decreased to 39.88 percent in 2023 from 40.67 percent in 2022. The percentage of mobile phone users aged five and above has increased to 99 percent in 2023. However, in the age group of over 15 years, the internet usage rate increased slightly to 50.1 percent in 2023 compared to 2022.
