Dengue situation in the country has been showing an alarming trend as first four months of the calendar year have recorded 24 deaths, well ahead of the beginning of the rainy season. The country reported 10 deaths during the first four months of the last year, according to available official data.

Meanwhile 1952 people have been admitted to hospitals with dengue between January 1 and April 19 (Friday) while the figure was 920 during the same period of the last year. Daily health bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed that it recorded the latest two deaths on Wednesday and Saturday in the last week.

According to public health experts, number of dengue cases usually increases during the rainy season, however the country has already reported increased number of hospitalisation cases.

The country reported a total of 13 cases in 24-hour period till Friday morning, of which nine were reported in Dhaka city and remaining four in other districts of the Dhaka division.

Some 1,826 dengue patients have been released from hospitals after receiving treatment from hospitals this year including seven of the last 24-hour. In a bid to contain the spread of dengue, government agencies concerned have taken different measures.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) authorities will launch a month-long campaign from next Monday to prevent dengue. The DNCC has allocated Tk 50,000 monthly for each of councillors including 54 general and 18 women councillors for reserved seats.
