Events

1857 – The University of Calcutta

On this day, the University of Calcutta was formally founded as the first fully-fledged university in South Asia.

1988 — Chittagong massacre

On this day, the activists of Awami League were rallying in the streets of Chittagong and were attacked by the police during the regime of autocratic ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad, leaving at least 24 people dead.

Births

William Congreve — an English playwright and poet — was born on this day in 1670. He is known for his clever, satirical dialogue and influence on the comedy of manners style of that period.

Constance Naden — an English writer, poet, and philosopher — was born on this day in 1858. She is considered one of the 19th century's foremost female poets.

Neil Diamond — a famous American singer-songwriter — was born on this day in 1941. He was one of the most successful artists of his time.

Deaths

On this day in 1962, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar — a Turkish poet, novelist, literary scholar and essayist — died. He is widely regarded as one of the most important representatives of modernism in Turkish literature.

On this day in 1965, Winston Churchill — a British politician, army officer, and writer — died. He became the first Honorary Citizen of the United States and later the first British Prime Minister to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

On this day in 1969, Matiur Rahman Mallik — a Bengali student leader — died. He was shot dead by the Pakistani police during the 1969 Uprising in then-East Pakistan. 

On this day in 2011, Bhimsen Joshi — an Indian classical vocalist — died. He is known for the Khayal form of singing, as well as for his popular renditions of devotional music (Bhajans and Abhangs).
