On this day, India Formally became a republic no longer under British rule.

1965 - Hindi

On this day, Hindi became the official language of India.

2006 - Telegram Ends

On this day, Western Union announced the end of Telegram Services.

Births

Ludwig Achim von Arnim — a German poet and novelist — was born on this day in 1781. He was a leading figure of German Romanticism.

Jules Feiffer — an American cartoonist and author — 1929. He won the Pulitzer Prize and is considered the most widely read satirist in the country. 

Eddie Van Halen — a Dutch-American musician and songwriter — was born on this day in 1955. He was voted number one in a Guitar World magazine reader's poll for "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.

Deaths

On this day in 1849, Thomas Lovell Beddoes — British poet, playwright, and medical doctor — died. He is best known for his blank-verse play entitled The Bride's Tragedy.

On this day in 1855, Gérard de Nerval — French Romantic poet and translator — died. He is best remembered for his translation of Goethe's Faust.

On this day in 1954, M. N. Roy — an Indian revolutionary, radical activist, philosopher, and author — died. He was the founder of the Mexican Communist Party and the Communist Party of India.
