Events

1845 – "The Raven"

On this day, Poe’s world-famous narrative poem ‘The Raven’ was published in The Evening Mirror in New York, the first publication with the name of the author- Edgar Allan Poe.

Births

Anton Chekhov — a Russian playwright and short-story writer — was born on this day in 1860. He is considered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history.

Romain Rolland — a French dramatist, novelist, essayist, art historian and mystic — was born on this day in 1866. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915 "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings".

Abdus Salam — a Pakistani theoretical physicist — was born on this day in 1926. He was the first Pakistani to receive a Nobel Prize in science- for his contribution to the electroweak unification theory.

Germaine Greer — an Australian writer and public intellectual — was born on this day in 1939. She is regarded as one of the major voices of the second-wave feminist movement in the latter half of the 20th century.

Deaths

On this day in 1837, Alexander Pushkin — a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist — died. He is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature.

On this day in 1888, Edward Lear — an English artist, illustrator, musician, author, and poet — died. He is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularized.

On this day in 1963, Robert Frost — an American poet — died. The four-time-Pulitzer-winning poet is known for his realistic depictions of rural life and mesmerizing poetry.
