What Happened on January 30th

1969 – Beatles’ Last Public Performance

On this day, The Beatles made their last public performance giving an off-the-cuff concert on the roof of the London recording studio. In April of the following year, Paul McCartney formally announced the group's breakup.

1948 — Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi

On this day, Indian political and spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by a Hindu extremist.

1972 — Disappearance of Zahir Raihan

On this day, renowned Bangladeshi novelist, writer, and filmmaker Zahir Raihan disappeared. It is believed that he was killed with many others by armed Bihari collaborators and soldiers of the Pakistan Army. 

Births

Jaishankar Prasad — an Indian poet — was born on this day in 1889. He was a famed figure in modern Hindi literature.

Phil Collins — n English drummer, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist — was born on this day in 1951. He was the drummer and then the singer of the rock band Genesis, and is also a successful solo artist.

Christian Bale — an English actor — was born on this day in 1974. This many-award-winning actor is mostly known for his intense method acting style.

Deaths

On this day in 1948, Orville Wright — an aviation pioneer — died. He is best known for inventing the airplane with his brother, Wilbur.

On this day in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi — an Indian political and spiritual leader — died. He led the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
