What Happened on January 31st

1865 — Abolishment of Slavery

On this day, the House of Representatives passed a constitutional amendment to abolish slavery.

Births

Franz Peter Schubert — an Austrian composer — was born on this day in 1797. His talent as a composer of classical and romantic compositions was mostly ignored while he was alive but became significant only in the 19th century.

Theodore William Richards — an American scientist — was born in 1868.  He was awarded the 1914 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

D. R. Bendre — a Kannada poet — was born on this day in 1896. The numerous-award-winning poet played an important role in Indian literature.

Rudolf Mössbauer — a German physicist — was born on this day in 1929. He is mostly known for discovering the Mossbauer Effect.

Deaths

On this day in 1956, A. A. Milne — an English author — died. He is best known for his books about the teddy bear ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ and various poems.

On this day in 1969, Meher Baba — an Indian spiritual master — died. He is famous for claiming thyself an Avatar (God in human form).
