What Happened on February 1st

Many events happen in our everyday life. Some of those turn out to be significant whereas some are not. We want to remind our readers of those events that came to be historical as time reels.

Events

1960 — Protest against Racial Discrimination

On this day, four black college students began a sit-in protest against racial discrimination after they were refused service at a lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C.

2014 — Spain Abortion Law Protests

On this day, thousands gathered in Spain to protest a new law that would put greater restrictions on abortions in the country. The law would make abortion legal only in cases where the mother's life was at risk or pregnancies that were the result of rape. The protesters worried that the law would take established rights away from women.

Births

John Napier — a Scottish mathematician — was born on this day in 1550. He is best known as the discoverer of logarithms.

Langston Hughes — an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist — was born on this day in 1902. He is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance.

Hussain Muhammad Ershad — a Bangladeshi Army Chief and Former President of Bangladesh — was born on this day in 1930. He is the founder of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party.

Deaths

On this day in 1871, Alexander Serov — a Russian composer and music critic — died. He is notable as one of the most important music critics in Russia during the 1850s and 1860s and as the most significant Russian composer of the period.

On this day in 1947, Jatindramohan Bagchi — a Bengali poet and editor — died. He was a prolific contributor to a number of literary journals and the Bengali literature.

On this day in 2012, Wisława Szymborska — a Polish poet — died. She was a recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature.
