1830 — Greece Declares Independence

On this day, Greece declares independence at the London Conference under the supervision of France, Russia, and Britain.

1927 — Dainik Basumati’ Genesis

On this day, Dainik Basumati newspaper was first published under the editorship of Hemendra Prasad Ghosh and Panchkari Bandyopadhyay.

Births

Felix Mendelssohn — a renowned German composer — was born on this day in 1809. He is famous for his melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

Atindranath Bose — an Indian revolutionary — was born on this day in 1873. He is the one who first started the tradition of Durga Puja celebration in India.

Prabhat Kumar Mukhopadhyay — a renowned Bengali author — was born on this day 1873. His short stories were mainly based on real-life situations and his characters belong to middle-class families.

Urmila Devi — a Bangladeshi leader and author — was born on this day in 1883. She was a leading figure in the Indian independence movement against British rule.

Deaths

On this day in 1468, Johannes Gutenberg — a German blacksmith, goldsmith, inventor, printer, and publisher — died. He introduced printing to Europe with the printing press.

On this day in 1976, Jiten Ghosh — a Bangladeshi revolutionary and communist leader — died. He participated and played an important role in the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.

On this day in 1935, Bhabani Prasad Bhattacharya — an Indian revolutionary — died. He played an important role in the Indian independence movement against British rule.
