There's No Need To Form Polls-Time Govt: Samsher Mobin Chowdhury

Trinamool BNP is a party founded by former minister and one-time leader of BNP late Barrister Nazmul Huda. In the party's first conference and council last Monday, two former leaders of BNP- former foreign secretary and ambassador Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury (Bir Bikram) and advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker came to the top leadership of the party. Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury has been elected the Chairperson of Trinamool BNP and Taimur has been elected as the General Secretary of the party.

Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury was the foreign secretary during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government. After retiring in 2007, He joined BNP in 2008 and became the vice chairman of the party in 2009. 

Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury withdrew from BNP politics on October 28, 2015. Before the 2018 elections, he joined the Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh and became active in politics again. 

After joining Trinamool BNP, Samsher Mobin Chowdhury spoke about the country's politics, elections, and his own party recently. The interview was conducted by Ahmed Selim.

You have joined the Trinamool BNP and assumed the top leadership. What does it feel like?

The party elected me as the chairperson. I am very happy. I am thankful to the party members. As much as I can, I will work for the party, for the people of Bangladesh. I will cherish the spirit of the liberation war, and the ideals of the liberation war.

What is your comment on the ongoing political situation in Bangladesh?

There are many flaws in the ongoing politics of Bangladesh. Where inflation is spiraling out of control. We produce potatoes, not import them, but people are not able to buy potatoes. We produce onion but it is beyond affordability. We have to stand against this syndicate. Bangladesh should be made free of syndicates.

Will Trinamool BNP be close to Awami League? Or will the BNP be close? Or do politics themselves?

Nothing like that will happen. Trinamool BNP will do its own politics. 

What are your thoughts on the polls-time government?

There is no need for a polls-time government. If the Election Commission can play its role properly. However, the Election Commission should be allowed to function properly.

How do you see the quadrilateral activities of India-China and the US-Russia regarding Bangladesh?

I think our foreign policy should be carried forward keeping in mind the interests of the people of Bangladesh. We seek friendship with all but we will not sacrifice ourselves to anyone's interests. This is a huge challenge. National unity must be built to face this challenge.

What is the future of the country's economy?

The future of the country's economy is at stake in many areas right now. Especially the price inflation is increasing a lot. Although it will decrease. However, the prices of people's daily necessities such as onions, eggs, and potatoes are increasing. This is very strange. Not being able to control these things is a huge weakness. I hope the government will be able to control it.
