Romance the Great Lake Region in the state of Illinois. While most of us recognize the state through its gem, Chicago, as a traveler, one must look beyond it. With rich history, and a love for deep-dish pizzas, the state of Illinois can never be overlooked during your trips to the United States. If you find yourself captivated by the towering skyscrapers of Chicago, do make it a point to check out the smaller towns that could also knock you off your feet. Just some very unique experiences await travelers here in the land of Illinois.


Captivating Chicago

With tall skyscrapers in resplendent architecture, the city is the most recognized travel destination in the state of Illinois. Fondly known as The Windy City, it is renowned for its fascinating museums, world-class restaurants, and some acclaimed theaters. When in Chicago, you can feel a vibe that is inherent to the city. Chicago is also the muse of Lake Michigan, thus offering sweeping views across town. Some of its most popular museums include the Chicago History Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, and National Museum of Mexican Art, among others. Millennium Park is a popular destination where you can visit to experience a music concert. Do not miss out on the essential beach destinations here, such as North Avenue Beach, Oak Street Beach, South Shore Beach, to name a few. There are a total of 26 lakefront beaches, so take your pick! There is yet another interesting experience that the city with its imposing buildings has to offer, and that is an architecture boat tour. Finally, you cannot leave the city without eating its iconic deep-dish pizza, yes, it is called Chicago deep dish pizza in your city for a reason!

Extraordinary road trips

One of the greatest pleasures of being in the state of Illinois is to go on an extraordinary road trip. The state has some of the most scenic road trips to offer, as here you can drive through one of the National Scenic Byways. You could go from town to town exploring the wonders of each little place Illinois has to offer. Some quaint towns are just simply charming to say the least, such as Galena, a historic early mining town. Or you could go to Rockford that is known for its breweries. You can also drive through the Great River Road and head to Alton, and even check out the Muffler Men statues on Route 66.

Follow the genius architect

The visionary architect, and interior designer, Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the leading figures in American architecture. Here in Illinois you get a chance to explore 13 of his masterpieces, travelling 385 km across the state. The incredible journey will also feature two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely, the Frederick C. Robie House, and the Unity Temple. While the former is located in the campus of the University of Chicago, the latter is in Oak Park. You will also visit the gorgeous Emil Bach House, which is the only Frank Lloyd Wright creation where you can actually stay.

Spirits of Illinois

Let us discuss spirits of the intoxicating kind. Illinois is known to have some very talented distillers, and brewers, so much so that you will want to take some home for friends and family. You have ample opportunities to tour some of the most renowned distilleries in the state, such as Fox River Distilling Company, Stumpy’s Spirit Distillery, Quincy Street Distillery, just to name a few. There is also a handcrafted vodka tour at the Whiskey Acres in DeKalb. But if you are someone who loves wine, then you need to try Illinois’ popular Seyval Blanc, or venture and try a variety of dessert wines.

Explore Galena

As mentioned before, Galena is a quaint little town that has a historical significance. It is definitely worth your time when you are in the state of Illinois. It is located in northwestern Illinois, and boasts 85 percent of its buildings in the National Register of Historic Places. Yes, you read that right, a whooping 85 percent! The town has some fine museums that lets you get a picture of the history and culture of the place. You will find the Ulysses S. Grant Home here, which is the residence of the 18th President of the United States. Get on an adventure on the Mississippi River, and later try one of its distilleries._TOI
