400 Bangladeshis Detained in Libya Identified, 244 Agree to Return

More than 500 Bangladesh nationals were detained from the eastern costal area of Tripoli, the capital of Libya, while they were trying to go to Europe illegally. Bangladesh embassy in Libya has so far confirmed the identities of 400 Bangladeshis. Of them, 244 Bangladeshis have agreed to return to the country.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Libya Major General SM Shamim Uz Zaman confirmed the news to the media.

The ambassador said, “We have already interviewed 400 people. All of them are Bangladeshi nationals. Of them, 244 Bangladeshis have expressed their interest to return to the country while the remaining 156 refused to return.” 

He said those who are willing to return to the country will be repatriated with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The embassy is already in consultation with the IOM and local police for this.
