Lebanon's army rescued 27 migrants from a sinking boat off the coast of the northern city of Chekka. This information was confirmed by the country's army in a statement on Sunday (September 24).

According to a statement, 27 migrants were rescued from a sinking rubber boat off the coast of Chekka yesterday (September 23) with the help of the Navy and Coast Guard. All these aspirants headed for Europe.

An officer of the Lebanese army said on condition of anonymity that all the rescued migrants are Syrian citizens. They left for Europe from Cyprus, an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean. The boat carrying them met with an accident after approaching the Chekka coast.

Distance from Cyprus to Chekka by sea is 175 km.

The army official also said that the operation against the country's human trafficking gang has started a few hours after the rescue of these migrants and 42 people have already been arrested for their alleged involvement in the gang.
