The Malaysian authorities have arrested 567 immigrants, including 252 Bangladeshis, for illegally entering the country. They were arrested in a raid on Abdullah Hukum Apartment in Jalan Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, on Friday (Dec 29) night.

Syamsul Badrin Mohsin, director of the Immigration Department of Kuala Lumpur, said in a statement that 85 officers and employees of the Immigration Department visited 125 homes in the 14-storey building based on week-long intelligence about the movement of foreigners.

After checking the documents of more than 1,000 people, 528 men, 38 women, and one child were detained for not being able to show valid documents of residence in the country.

Among the detained are 252 Bangladeshis, 163 from Nepal, 75 from Myanmar, 72 from Indonesia, 4 from the Philippines, and 1 from India.

Syamsul said many of the detainees have entered the country using social visit passes. The detainees were taken to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot for investigation under the country's Immigration Act 1959/63.

"We have continued operations against illegal immigrants based on the complaints and information given by the local people. There will be no compromise on this,” he said.

He said an investigation is underway to trace the house owners who rented their houses to illegal immigrants.
