In 1518 some Portuguese traders came to Chattogram and settled in Deyang. Deyang was once the capital of Arakan kings. Here they also built a prison.
It is known from history that poet Alaol was imprisoned in that prison. In 1537, Sultan Ghiyasuddin Mahmud Shah allowed Portuguese merchants to build huts and churches on Deyang Hills in exchange for military assistance.
