Former Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, leader of the transport workers, who did not hold any position in the last committee of Awami League, was elected as AL presidium member in the new committee.

Besides, former AL joint general secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman were elected as presidium members in the new committee.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader have been re-elected as president and general secretary of Awami League respectively.

Three-member Election Commission Chairman Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun declared their names during the final day of the two-day national council of Awami League at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka today.

AL organizing secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Publicity and Publication Secretary Hasan Mahmud were elected as joint secretaries.

Besides, joint general secretaries of the previous committee of Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif and Dipu Moni were elected again as the same post in the new committee.  

Awami League Central Executive (ALCE) members SM Kamal Hossain and Mirza Azam were promoted to organisation secretaries.

Ahmed Hossain and BM Mozammel Haque, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapon, organising secretaries of AL in the last committee, were elected again at the same post in the new committee.  

AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel and State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, who were organising secretaries in the last committee, did not get found any place in the new AL’s partial committee.

State minister for Women Affairs Secretary Fazilatunnesa Indira, who was women affairs secretary of AL, was replaced by Meher Afroz Chumki.

SM Rezaul Karim, Minister of Housing & Public Works, who was law affiars secretary, was replaced by SC lawyer Nazibullah Hiru.

Abdus Sobhan Golap, who was office secretary in the last committee, was elected Publicity and Publication Secretary, while deputy office secretary Biblap Barua was elected as office secretary.

Yesterday, Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the two-day 21st council at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital where grassroots leaders from across the country thronged.

It was almost certain that Sheikh Hasina, who has been leading the party since 1981, will be re-elected as the AL president. Therefore, all eyes are on the general secretary post.

The council session today will elect the next central working committee of the ruling party for a three-year term. It will be attended by some 7,500 councilors from across the country.

AL sources said the number of women in the AL central committee will increase from the existing 15, as the Representation of the People Order 1972 stipulates that all registered political parties must increase female representation in their committees to 33 percent by 2020.
