The 129th birth anniversary of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the champion of democracy and one of the greatest leaders of undivided India, is being observed today (Wednesday).

Suhrawardy was born in a respected Muslim family in Medinipur of West Bengal, India on September 8 in 1892.

He was the unparalleled leader of all Indian politics, who had dedicated his entire life to ensure the welfare of the people by upholding democracy.

He served as the Premier of Bengal in British India and was the fifth Prime Minister of Pakistan. His father Justice Sir Zahid Suhrawardy was a Judge of the Calcutta High Court.

A young Suhrawardy studied in Calcutta Madrasa and attended St Xavier’s College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He obtained further degrees, including a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford and a Master of Arts in Arabic from Kolkata.

In 1956, the Awami League formed an alliance with the Republican Party to lead a coalition government in Pakistan.

Suhrawardy became prime minister and pledged to resolve the energy crises, address economic disparities between East and West Pakistan, and strengthen the armed forces.

He died at a Beirut hotel in Lebanon on December 5 in 1963. He was alone in the hotel suite at the time of his death.
