The Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, will hold its council in January next year.

Meanwhile, two women wings of the party, the Mohila Awami League and the Jubo Mohila League, will hold their councils in December.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader was expected to announce the exact dates on Sunday at a press conference, several highly placed sources in the Awami League told Dhaka Tribune.

The 22nd council of the Awami League will take place on December 24.

Awami League chief Shekh Hasina on Friday sounded confident of the party's victory in the next general election as it announced the date for its council amid threats of a tough campaign by the BNP to topple the government.

The present committee's tenure will expire in December.

The Chhatra League held its last council, its 29th one, in May 2018.

In July of that year, Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and Golam Rabbani became president and general secretary of the organization. They lost their posts in September 2019 over various allegations, including extortion in development projects.

Later, Al-Nahean Khan Joy and Lekhak Bhattacharya became acting president and acting general secretary of the Chattra League.

On January 4, 2020, on the foundation anniversary of the Chhatra League, Joy and Lekhak became president and general secretary. Since then they have been serving as the two top leaders of the organization.

But their record has not been spotless. Several leaders and activists of the Chhatra League have demanded a new council several times.

Their tenure may finally end at the upcoming founding anniversary of the Chhatra League.

The Jubo Mohila League was founded in 2002 with a convening committee headed by Nazma Akhter and Apu Ukil.

It held its first council on March 5, 2014, electing the two as president and general secretary, respectively.

Nazma and Apu were reelected as president and general secretary at the organization's second national triennial council on March 11, 2017.

The Mohila Awami League held its last council on March 4, 2017, where it elected Safia Khatun as president and Mahmuda Begum as general secretary. The committee's three-year term ended on March 4, 2020.
