In order to participate in the rally protesting the prison terms given to the BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a case filed over illegally accumulating wealth and hiding property information, BNP leaders and activists are congregating in front of the party's Nayapaltan office.

Protest marches are being conducted in regions and cities all around the nation aside from Dhaka. According to BNP, Tarique Rahman's and his wife Zubaida Rahman's legal situation is "an evil reflection of the government."

As previously reported, the demonstration in Dhaka will commence at 2:00 pm. The keynote speaker will be Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, general secretary of the BNP.

Since early in the morning, BNP leaders and activists have been observed marching in the direction of the party's Nayapaltan headquarters while carrying banners and yelling anti-Khaleda Zia chants.

Since launching its "one-point" demand to "oust" the current administration on July 12, the BNP has been demonstrating. The one-point demand calls for both the resignation of the current administration and the installation of a nonpartisan caretaker administration prior to the next election.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul said on Wednesday that a rally will be held in front of the party headquarters in the Nayapaltan neighborhood of the city on Friday, 4 August.

In a case filed for illegally accumulating riches and hiding property information, a Dhaka court sentenced BNP acting leader Tarique Rahman to nine years in prison and his wife Zubaida Rahman to three years on Wednesday.

The court also mandated the confiscation of property worth Tk2.74 crore that belonged to Tarique and Zubaida, who are both now evading capture. On Wednesday, 2 August, in the late afternoon, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Asaduzzaman made the announcement of the decision.

Along with the sentencing, the court also issued fresh arrest orders for them. With his most recent conviction, Tarique has now served a fifth term, compared to Zubaida's first.

Tarique Rahman started staying in London in 2007 for treatment during the caretaker rule, known as the 1/11 government. He has not returned to the country in the last 16 years.
