The Awami League administration, according to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, is attempting to "distort history" and "defame" the late president Ziaur Rahman by erroneously connecting him to the murder of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the BNP leader.

He claimed that the Awami League administration wanted to defame Ziaur Rahman and depict him as a monster in addition to erasing his name.

At an award event commemorating the 42nd death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, which was held at party chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office, Fakhrul made the comments.

The BNP secretary general claimed that attempts were being made to thwart the current movement by linking Ziaur Rahman to Bangabandhu's murder and disseminating false information.

"Back then, there was no BNP. Ziaur Rahman was the deputy chief of the army, not the chief, he continued.
