Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has become the latest BNP veteran to have been detained by police amid violent antigovernment protests.

A Chattogram-based member of the opposition party’s policymaking body National Standing Committee, Khosru was detained in a house on road No. 81 in Dhaka’s Gulshan around 12:30am on Friday (November 3).

Harunor Rashid, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch, said Khosru was taken to the DB office.

It was not immediately clear on what charges he was detained, but Khosru is among those accused in several cases related to the BNP’s Oct 28 rally.

Mahbub-e-Rahman Shamim, the organising secretary of the BNP, said the law enforcers surrounded the house around 11:30pm on Thursday and then took Khosru to the DB office.

Khosru has also been working as the convenor of the party's Foreign Affairs Committee, playing a significant role in drawing support from other countries amid a movement to topple the Awami League government before the next election.

Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas were among those arrested earlier this week.

Khosru was one of the founders of Chattogram Stock Exchange and served as its chairman. He had also led the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industries as president.
