The nomination process initiated by the Awami League this morning has seen the sale of more than 300 nomination papers within the first two hours. Although Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the process at 10:30 am, the sale of nomination papers for party candidates commenced after 11:00 am. The 12th National election is scheduled for January 7.
Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, an AL advisory council member, was the first to collect a nomination form for the Gopalganj-3 constituency on behalf of the Prime Minister. Nomination form sales statistics for various divisions between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm indicate that 81 forms were sold for Dhaka Division, 51 for Chattogram, 17 for Sylhet, 26 for Mymensingh, 17 for Barishal, 39 for Khulna, 26 for Rangpur, and 44 for Rajshahi division.
A break was observed from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for lunch and prayer, during which the sale of nomination papers was temporarily halted. The central office and surrounding areas were bustling with aspiring candidates who had been gathering since morning to obtain the necessary forms.
Supporters of certain aspirants were seen celebrating with drums and other musical instruments, while others chanted party slogans and displayed large cut-outs of the party chief. The area beyond the GPO intersection experienced a blockade of vehicle movement with barricades.
Speaking to the media, HM Ibrahim, an aspirant for the Noakhali-1 constituency, expressed optimism about the election, noting the festive atmosphere among voters nationwide and anticipating a robust turnout.
Although candidates were instructed not to bring more than two people to purchase nomination forms, reports from the scene indicate that none of them adhered to this party directive.
