The ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday (November 29) asked why the  democratic countries, including the United States and European Union remained silent as the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party openly threatened to foil election to be held on January 7.

He made the remarks at a briefing at AL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s political office in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

‘The BNP is setting fire to buses, train in the name of observing strikes and blockades. The party also killed a police member in broad daylight, attacked the residence of chief justice, setting fire to police boxes and hospital,’ he said.

Quader, also the road, transport and bridges minister, posed a question to the democratic countries, including the US and EU.

He said that the US told that they would impose visa restrictions against those who wanted to undermine the election and now they remained silent.

He also slammed the country’s civil society bodies and human rights activists for not raising voice against BNP.

AL office secretary Biplab Barua, among others, was present at the briefing.
