Jatiya Party secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Thursday (December 7) said that they had no discussion over sharing seats in Bangladesh’s upcoming general election in Wednesday night’s meeting with leaders of the ruling Awami League.

‘Any such discussion over seat sharing with Awami League is not needed,’ he said while addressing a press conference at the Jatiya Party chairman’s Banani office in Dhaka.

He said that the meeting was held in a good atmosphere.

‘The election experience of the past five years has not been pleasant. There is still fear of a fair election,’ he said and added that there could be a silent revolution like that in 1991 if people across the country could cast their votes.

‘We did not talk about seat sharing. This is not needed. We want a fair election environment. They reassured us,’ he said.

He said that Jatiya Party believed that Awami League will compete with his party this time.

Responding to a question, he said that boycotting the election was ‘less in the history of Jatiya Party’.

‘We understand that elections are necessary to maintain the democratic process. However, Jatiya Party will do well if voters can cast their votes in the election. I have asked Awami League to help the Election Commission. They assured us of a fair election,’ he said.

He said that Anti-AL votes were now more than the votes of Awami League and hoped that there would be a silent vote revolution if voters could come to the polling stations and cast their votes freely.

Senior leaders of Jatiya Party held a meeting with the senior leaders of Awami League at the night following Wednesday.
