Chunnu Says Raushan's Statement Contradicts Party’s Charter

Jatiya Party Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu has said he is not taking Raushan Ershad's statement into account as it has no basis and is contrary to the party’s charter.

“Besides, she doesn't have any say in party matters. So, I am not taking into account what they said,” he said at an emergency press conference at the Banani office of the Jatiya Party chairman on Sunday (Jan 28) afternoon.

Earlier today, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader and Secretary General Chunnu were relieved of their posts by its founder co-chairman and chief patron Raushan.

Kazi Mamunur Rashid was named as the secretary general until the next council.

The upheaval came a day before the new Parliament held its maiden session.

In a letter on Sunday (Jan 28), Raushan said she was removing Quader and Chunnu by Article 20/1 of the party’s charter. She said the duo’s speeches and statements before the last election and their role in the post-election period have severely damaged the party.

Raushan blamed the duo’s inaction for the party’s poor poll results and for letting go of protesting leaders and activists without any discussion.

As many as 668 leaders and activists voluntarily resigned from the party on January 25, causing a great crisis in the party.

Jatiya Party is expected to serve as the opposition party in parliament for a third consecutive time, despite winning only 11 seats.
