BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury commented that merger is made to create another opportunity for those who looted banks.

He made this comment at a discussion meeting at the National Press Club in the capital on Wednesday (April 17).

Amir Khasru said, "The government is deciding to merge banks. Merger cannot be a decision of any government. It is a market decision. This requires the opinion of the shareholders. But what is seen? There is no sight of shareholders. They (government) are deciding to merge.

He said, 'This merger has created another opportunity for those who have looted the bank. In order to protect them... those who looted the wealth of Bangladesh, those who looted the bank deposits, the government took this consolidation process by force to give them more benefits.'

Commenting on the upcoming upazila elections as another 'voting scam' by the government, Amir Khasru said that they (the government) have held upazila elections. In a country where there is no vote, there is no opportunity to participate in the vote, where there is no rival, there is no participation, what is the vote for? This election, it is leading the people of another country to a scam. It is hypocrisy in the name of votes. Today, they (the government) are holding the entire nation hostage through a vote stealing scheme.

Reiterating that the opposition parties' "unity" is unbreakable against all the "misdeeds" of the government, Amir Khasru said, "The good news is that the people of Bangladesh have clarified their position today. Those who are in the opposition party, our unity is unbreakable, the unity of BNP is unbreakable. There is no one who has done nothing to break this unity. Money, intimidation, prison-tyranny, oppression-torture have all been tried. Leaders and activists of the opposition party have slept in paddy fields, slept on embankments but did not compromise. Opposition leaders did not compromise. We have unanimously given 31 points. This is an ongoing movement. In other words, we are united in the issues of equality, human dignity, justice, etc. of the liberation war. Our movement is ongoing.

The discussion meeting was held on the initiative of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD to recognize the day of declaration of independence on April 10 as 'Republic Day'. General Secretary of JSD Shahid Uddin Mahmud Swapan presented the demand of Republic Day in the meeting.
