Petter Siddle has been added to Australia's squad for the Boxing Day test against New Zealand as bowling cover following the injury to Josh Hazelwood.

The Australians had a comfortable win in the series-opening day-night test at Perth over the weekend, despite Hazlewood's absence from the attack for most of the match, and can clinch the three-match series with a victory in Melbourne.

Regular test spinner Nathan Lyon, meanwhile, has missed out on a spot in Australia's 14-man one-day international squad for a three-game series next month in India.

Australia selector Trevor Hohns said Lyon was still in a contender for limited-overs selection in the future but selectors wanted to see more of the combination between leg-break bowler Adam Zampa and left-arm orthodox spinner Ashton Agar.

"The performance of our white ball squads has been strong, and we are hoping to build the momentum towards the T20 World Cup at home (next year) and ultimately build towards the 2023 ICC World Cup in India," Hohns said.

Marnus Labuschagne has been been included in the ODI squad on the back of his exceptional form batting at No. 3 in the test squad and his one-day form for Queensland in first-class cricket.

"We've got one eye to the T20 World Cup and we've also talked about being really role specific and looking for guys who can finish," Australia head coach Justin Langer said. "Marnus is a very good player of spin bowling. He's a good fielder, he bowls leg-spin, he gives us some good options and he's in the form of his life."

Top-order batsman Usman Khawaja and all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell were been omitted from the squad. Fast bowler Jason Behrendorff is injured and was not considered for selection. All three of Australia's front-line pacemen were included, with Hazlewood expected to return to fitness and tour India along with Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

Assistant coach Andrew McDonald will lead the team in India on Jan. 14, 17 and 19, while Langer remains in Australia following a hectic 18 months in the job.

Langer said it would be hypocritical to insistent on other staff to make sure they took time off and recharged but not do it himself.

"And the other part of it is I can't also be wanting to give people opportunities, (but) not give them opportunities.

Australia squad for India tour: Aaron Finch (captain), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Kane Richardson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Ashton Turner, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
