Bangladesh's hopes of ending a 22-year winless streak against India were dashed on Monday night as they were defeated 2-0 in the second leg of the joint qualifications for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and the AFC Asian Cup 2023 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar.

Sunil Chhetri, India's captain and a midfielder, scored twice in the 79th and 89th minutes, taking advantage of Bangladesh's defensive blunders.

In the first leg encounter at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata in 2019, the men in red and green were close to ending their winless streak, leading 1-0 until the 88th minute after a goal from their forward Saad Uddin, but Indian defender Adil Khan equalized in the 89th minute, prolonging Bangladesh's wait.

With the victory, India moved into third place in Group E with six points earned from one win and two draws, while Bangladesh remained in last place with two points earned from two draws. India also gave themselves a chance to advance directly to the third round of Asian Cup qualifying.
