Zimbabwe's
ongoing ICC Women's ODI World Cup qualifiers have been canceled due to
infection with a new variant of coronavirus Omicron. According to the rankings,
Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies got a chance in the main round.
Bangladesh
topped the B-group points table of the tournament. Nigar Sultana's team
defeated the United States and Pakistan. However, they lost to Thailand.
Rumana-Salma
did not have a problem with that. Bangladesh women's cricket team will play ODI World Cup for the first time as it is ahead in ICC rankings.
The
Women's ODI World Cup will be held in New Zealand in March 2022. New Zealand,
Australia, England, South Africa and India have already qualified. They are
joined by Bangladesh, West Indies and Pakistan.
The
ICC confirmed the cancellation of the qualifiers in a statement on Saturday
(November 27). With just four months to go before the World Cup qualifiers, the
World Cup's governing body has said it will not be able to reschedule the qualifiers.
ICC
Head of Events Chris Tetley said in a statement: "We are very sorry to see
the rest of the tournament canceled. However, in a very short time, travel bans
have come from many African countries. That is why there was a fear that the
participating countries would not be able to return to the country. "
The
first variant of B1.1.529 was identified on November 11 in the African country
of Botswana, which is now officially called Omicron by the World Health
Organization. This new type of corona has already been identified in South
Africa. The number of victims of this variant is around 1,200 in Johannesburg
and Pretoria.
Citizens
of countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Lesotho
have been banned from traveling by the United Kingdom, the United States, and
the European Union.
