The Bangladesh National Zoo (BNZ) authority is seeking ways to reduce the number of animals, including donkeys, horses, snakes, crocodiles, and various birds, as their population exceeds the capacity of the facility.

The institution has revealed that out of 137 enclosures in its 187-acre aviary, there are currently 342 animals of 135 species. They aim to reduce the population of at least 10 species, indicating a surplus of animals.

Muhammad Rafiqul Islam Talukdar, the director of the aviary, stated that they can sell some of the surplus animals currently housed in the zoo. The rest will be transferred to the forestry department.

He mentioned that the zoo currently has the capacity to house around 2600 animals. Although there is the capacity to house six donkeys, there are 13 present. Nine are housed with donkeys, three are housed with waterbuck, and one is housed with three horses.

Presently, there are 31 pythons, but only space for 20. There are eight Arabian horses, but only space for four. Four local horses are present, with space for two. There are 13 crocodiles, with space for seven. The zoo authority wishes to reduce the number of native pigeons from 80 to 45.

The zoo authority also seeks approval from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to reduce the number of animals outside its capacity. Muhammad Rafiqul Islam stated that they must maintain a balance between the capacity of the enclosures and the number of animals to prevent health risks. Moreover, keeping too many animals also incurs unnecessary expenses on the government.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between the enclosure's capacity and the number of animals. He also mentioned that if surplus animals can be sold, it will bring revenue to the government and reduce management issues. Additionally, there are animals for visitors to see.

The zoo's director stated that if approved by the ministry, they will take measures to manage the surplus animals. They may transfer crocodiles to the forestry department, as they may not be suitable for zoo visitors. They also proposed selling donkeys, horses, and emus. Waterfowls and herons could be released into the wild with the ministry's approval. However, all decisions will be subject to ministry approval.
