Japan's Sony And Kioxia Seeking US Approval to Supply to Huawei: Nikkei

Japan's Sony Corp and memory chipmaker Kioxia Holdings Corp applied for US approval to continue supplying Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, Nikkei reported on Sunday.

If confirmed, the move follows other technology firms, such as Intel Corp, which have recently obtained licenses from the US authorities, reports Reuters.

With the US-China relations at their worst in decades, Washington has pressured governments around the world to pressure out Huawei, alleging that the telecommunications giant will pass data to the Chinese government for spying.

Huawei is one of the largest customers for Sony's mobile image sensors. Kioxia Holdings Corp is the No. 2 world manufacturer of flash memory chips and a Huawei supplier.

Nikkei here said that without US licences, Sony and Kioxia would face a risk to their income.

Kioxia warned that US Huawei brakes could cause oversupply of the memory chip and lower prices. It recently revealed a proposal for a multi-billion-dollar listing as the US-China uncertainty clouds the global chip market.

Sony spokeswoman said that the organization complied with all the legislation, but could not comment on individual clients.

A Kioxia spokesman also declined to comment.
