Passenger train services between Bangladesh and India have
resumed after being closed for almost two years due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Tickets for three passenger trains have started selling from today (May 24).
Among them, tickets for Maitri Express and Mitali Express
will be sold from Kamalapur and Chattogram railway stations in the capital. And
Bondhan Express tickets will be sold from Khulna and Jessore railway stations.
Apart from this, Tickets for these trains will not be sold
anywhere else. Tickets are issued daily from 9am to 5pm. One has to show the
original copy of the passport and apply for the advance ticket in the given
form.
Director of Bangladesh Railway (Public Relations) Nahid
Hossain Khan confirmed that the sale of these tickets has started from 8 am
today. The date was finalized at an inter-ministerial meeting at the Railway
Building on Monday (May 23).
Train service between the two countries will start on May 29
through Maitri and Bondhan Express. Besides, Mitali Express will transport
passengers from June 1.
Before the closure of rail communication in March 2020, the
Maitri Express used to run five days a week on the Dhaka-Kolkata route and the
Bondhan Express on the Khulna-Kolkata route twice a week. The Mitali Express
will run on the Dhaka-New Jalpaiguri route four days a week.
According to Railway Ministry sources, Railway Minister
Nurul Islam Sujan is expected to visit India later this month. At that time, he
will jointly inaugurate the Mitali Express from New Delhi's Railway Building
with Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
