Home affairs minister Peter Dutton, a senior leader of the Australian government, tested positive for coronavirus, he said Friday.
Mr. Dutton, who serves on the Committee on National Security, said he woke up with a "temperature and sore throat."
He said he immediately contacted his local health department in Queensland and is now in hospital.
There are 156 confirmed cases currently in Australia, including US actor Tom Hanks, who is in Queensland.
Hanks is there to make a film about Elvis Presley with his wife Rita Wilson-who also has the virus.
"I ended up with a fever this morning and I'm sore throat. I'm doing better and will be posting in due course," Mr. Dutton said on Twitter.
