South Africa's Virus Cases Jump to 402, Has Most in Africa

Infections of coronavirus in South Africa have soared to 402 Monday, up 128 from the day before, continuing to concern about rapid development and rendering it the region with the most infections in Africa.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to discuss the growing threat with the nation and many expect him to announce new restrictive measures to try to slow disease spread.

More than half of the overall cases in South Africa are in the province of Gauteng, which includes Johannesburg, the country's largest city with 5.7 million inhabitants, and the capital, Pretoria, with 2.4 million, according to estimates published by the government minister for health.

South Africa has outpaced Egypt with the largest number of cases to become the African republic. South Africa has not had a death from the disease reported. Most cases originate from travelers from Europe and other countries, but the number of cases being transmitted locally is increasing.
