Indians to Hold 9-Minute Corona Lightshow

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the Indians to keep candles and cell phones up for nine minutes on Sunday to remove the "darkness and confusion" of the coronavirus crisis.

On Thursday, the reported number of coronavirus cases in India crossed 2,000 with 53 deaths, while some experts claim that the country's 1.3 billion population are still very few.

India has been locked up since March 25, leaving millions of migrant employees unexpectedly jobless, and leading hundreds of thousands to seek to get home to their hometowns, often on foot.

“Friends, amidst the darkness spread by the Corona pandemic, we must continuously progress towards light and hope,” Modi said in an address to the nation on Friday.

“We must defeat the deep darkness of the crisis, by spreading the glory of light in all four directions.”

He said people should turn off sunlight at 9:00 p.m. on Sundays, light candles and earthenware lamps, and switching on cellphone flashlights at their doorway and balconies for nine minutes.
