India reported the highest single-day increase in the number of fresh Covid-19 cases on Sunday with the discovery of 28,637 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative amount to 849,553.

India's Federal Ministry of Health confirmed 551 new deaths from COVID-19 over the last 24 hours across the country, raising the number of deaths to 22,674.

This is reported to be the biggest single-day peak in the number of fresh cases in the country so far.

So far, according to the Ministry, 534,621 people have been discharged from hospitals for improvement.

"The number of active cases in the country right now is 292,258, according to the ministry.

The country has entered the "Unlock 2.0" phase, although restrictions remain in full force within the COVID-19 containment zones.

The country's civil aviation watchdog-Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed last week that commercial foreign flights to and from India will be suspended until 31 July.

On Thursday, the government of Uttar Pradesh, the country's largest population-based province, agreed to enforce a weekend lockdown from Friday night to Monday morning to break the COVID-19 transmission line.
