Saudi-Led Coalition Says Intercepts Missiles, Drones from Yemen's Houthis

Yemen's Saudi-led coalition said on Monday that it intercepted and disabled four missiles and six destructive drones launched by Houthi rebels into the kingdom overnight.

Cross-border assaults by the Iran-aligned Houthi militia have intensified since late May, when the ceasefire of the novel coronavirus came to an end. Missiles entered the Saudi capital of Riyadh at the end of June.

The coalition, in a statement published by the Saudi state news agency SPA, did not specify where the items were being captured but claimed drones had been sent from the Houthi-controlled capital of Sanaa to Saudi Arabia.

Houthi-run news agency Al Masirah did not report an attack by Houthi troops but claimed the coalition carried out airstrikes in different regions under Houthi influence on Monday.

The coalition interfered in Yemen in March 2015 after the Houthis expelled the globally recognized Saudi government from the capital, Sanaa, at the end of 2014.

The Houthis, who control most large urban centers, say they are fighting a corrupt system.

The United Nations has recently initiated simulated discussions between the warring sides on a lasting truce and confidence-building initiatives to resume peace negotiations.

Yet talks have been hampered by the rise in abuse after the conclusion of the truce.

The war has killed more than 100,000 people and caused what the United Nations describes as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
