Florida became the second state after California to surpass New York on Sunday, the hardest affected state at the start of the US novel coronavirus epidemic, according to the Reuters tally.

Total Covid-19 incidents in the Sunshine State increased by 9.300 to 423.855 on Sunday, just one spot behind California, which currently tops the nation with 448.497 reports. New York is in third with 415,827 cases, reports Reuters.

Still, New York has reported more than 32,000 deaths in every US territory, with Florida in eighth position, with nearly 6,000 deaths.

On average, Florida has added more than 10,000 cases a day in July, while California has been adding 8,300 cases a day and New York added 700 cases a day.

The spike in Florida has persisted as Republican State Governor Ron DeSantis has consistently said that he would not allow wearing masks mandatory and that schools will be reopened in August.

On the opposite, the state of New York has tried to contain the outbreak, closing down supermarkets and restaurants and the use of masks.

The rise in cases also comes as President Donald Trump is pushing to re-open US schools in the fall, despite teachers’ and families’ concerns that children could contract or transmit the disease should they return to the classroom.

After New York, Texas had a record of 391,000 cases of coronavirus. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said that Tropical Storm Hanna, which arrived on Saturday as a Category 1 hurricane, was extremely daunting as it was spreading through the state that was hardest affected by coronavirus.

For the tenth time in July, Alaska set a record for a one-day rise in cases, with 234 new infections on Sunday, bringing the state’s total to 3,100. Oklahoma hit a record for new cases five times in July, with 1,204 new infections on Sunday bringing the state’s total to 31,285.

More than 146,000 Americans have died of Covid-19—nearly a quarter of the world 's total — and there are about 4.2 million reported cases in the country, so at least 1 in 79 people has been affected.
